In this multipart series on John Paul Martinez’s near-death experience, American former gang member John shares how a violent night brought him to the brink of death.
John grew up in Rialto, California, as the youngest of five children in a broken, chaotic home. He was molested as a young child, and when his parents divorced, he went to live with his father— who worked 10–12-hour shifts and was rarely home. Desperately longing for love and belonging, John began running away and hanging around with the kids up the street. Around age 11 or 12, he was invited to a party where he encountered members of Southside Rialto, one of the biggest gangs in the city. After two gang members were killed and a memorial was held, one of the gang members embraced John and told him he was part of the family. That was all it took. John was drawn into gang life, and from there, the crimes escalated— robberies, stolen cars, and eventually prison. By 1997, following his release from prison, John was back on the streets, back at parties, and back in danger.
And I remember I get out. I want to go kick it with my homeboys and stuff like that and go see how everybody’s doing. And I remember going across the city, going to my neighborhood and stuff, and seeing a couple of my homeboys. They started hugging me, started loving on me, saying, “Welcome back. You’re out.” And there was a party on the next street as well. So, I went to the next block, and I was hanging out, having a good time. And I remember I’m kicking it, hanging out. And, eventually, about 1:30 or 2:00 in the morning, I asked them. I say, “Can you guys just take me home?” And so I remember jumping in the car, and all of a sudden, this individual jumps out of the bushes.
I wasn’t too sure what was going on, but I remember, like, yelling out my neighborhood and saying a whole bunch of stuff. The next thing you know, the gun was to the side of my head. I was in the car, and I remember the two girls sitting next to me. But I turned briefly, and I heard the gun go off. One of the shots was into the back of my head, and the other shot was in the cab of the truck. I remember falling down on this girl’s lap. These girls are crying, and they’re shouting and tripping out, and I remember thinking to myself, “I’m paralyzed,” because I couldn’t move.
I remember hearing this loud ringing in my head, like this buzzing noise. It was really super loud. Thinking to myself, “What just happened?” And then I looked in the mirror as I was lying down on this girl’s lap. I can see this person in the back of the truck. It looked like he was trying to reload the gun to come finish me off.
In Part 2, on the way to the hospital, images from across his life suddenly began unfolding before him. I saw myself as a young kid through the present day. And through all these slides, I experienced all the emotion, all of the fun, all of the pain, all the different things from all these slides very quickly. Join us tomorrow for Part 2 of John Paul Martinez’s near-death experience. (Anthony Chene production)
