Today, we explore “Overcomer,” a 2019 film about identity, faith, and discovering who you are when everything else falls away. Principal Olivia Brooks asks John to coach cross-country, a sport he neither knows nor enjoys. Only one student shows up for tryouts: Hannah. John learns she ran at Franklin High, was born on Valentine’s Day, and has asthma. John visits Thomas for advice and vents about losing his basketball team. Thomas challenges him to strip away his roles and name who he is beneath them all.A hospital visit leads John to Thomas Hill, a blind diabetic, and he realizes Thomas is Hannah’s father and arranges a reunion. Renewed in faith, Hannah attends the school’s midterm monologue presentation, where John is a judge. Transformed, Hannah returns the stolen items and visits her father, now in intensive care. She runs her best race, closes in on reigning champion Gina Mimms, summons one final surge, and collapses at the finish, convinced she has come in second. Moments later, an official confirms the video shows she wins by an inch. Barbara says she’s proud and, softened in forgiveness, nods with a quiet smile when Hannah asks to visit her father. The film reminds viewers that real purpose and worth come from trusting God, embracing forgiveness, and finding identity beyond earthly roles.
